About
School History
Lorraine Elementary School opened in 1996, the year of the Olympics, to serve the students in the southwest corner of Rockdale County. Due to construction delays, the building was not ready for occupancy until January 6, 1997. For the first part of the year we were split on two other campuses in trailers. Our first staff came almost exclusively from existing personnel in Rockdale County. Only two teachers were hired from outside the system. We housed approximately 560 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. For the past five years, we have gradually increased our enrollment due to residential development. Presently, we have approximately 600 students enrolled. LES also serves all students in Rockdale County who have been identified as having severe or profound disabilities. In the winter of 2004, Lorraine was recognized as a School of Excellence. Many factors contributed to this success through the years. Lorraine has been awarded the State of Georgia Governor’s Office of Student Achievement awards for the following years: 2005 (Gold), 2006 (Silver), 2008 (Silver), 2009 and 2010 (Gold). These awards were given for highest percentage meeting or exceeding standards.
